Portmahomack - Hogmanay Success
Rev. John MacLeod
says a few words
While Edinburgh failed and Glasgow buckled due to high winds, Portmahomack
successfully completed its Hogmanay festivities.
After a very wet and
windy day, the rain lifted in the late evening. Buffeted by strong winds,
the folk gathered at the war memorial for a short celebration of hope by Rev.
John MacLeod. Then followed the torchlight procession along the front
to the fountain. The parade was led by pipers Martin and Ross Fraser. The wind
was so strong that most of the lanterns were extinguished but several
enterprising souls managed to keep theirs going to the fountain.
Pipers lead the marchers with the wind to their backs
The strong wind made the night very clear and blew the smoke from the
brazier up Castle Street like fine spray. Then the count down, the cheers,
exchanged wishes and celebratory drams.
Fireworks moving sideways
Then the spectacle of fireworks
across the water from Tain, Dornoch, Golspie and several places further
afield. Complementary soup and sausage rolls were served and finally
Portmahomack fireworks were deployed. The wind was so strong that people
were wondering if they were still in the Port by the time they exploded.
The wind eventually began to take its toll on the revelers. As folk
started to drift off to continue celebrations indoors, the rain closed
in bringing things to a close.
